El riesgo cardiovascular, se incrementa a consecuencia de la arterioesclerosis que se produciendo con el envejecimiento.

Tras las Navidades, todos tenemos el propósito de adelgazar y hacer ejercicio físico. En muchos pacientes, en particular a partir de los 50 años de edad, es importante valorar el riesgo cardiovascular, consecuencia de la arterioesclerosis que se va produciendo con el envejecimiento. En muchas de estas personas no hay síntomas evidentes de enfermedad y la mejor estrategia es prevenir, antes de sufrir un infarto de miocardio o un ictus; recordemos que las enfermedades cardiovasculares son la primera causa de muerte en nuestra sociedad.

Valentín Fuster, eminente cardiólogo del Hospital Monte Sinaí de Nueva York y director general del Centro Nacional de Investigación Cardiológica, ha establecido 5 parámetros como indicadores de la salud cardiovascular denominado: Índice Fuster-Bewat. Estos son: la tensión arterial, la actividad física, el índice de masa corporal, el consumo de fruta y verdura, y el consumo de tabaco. Estos datos son producto de un estudio publicado en Journal of American College of Cardiology, en el que se demuestra que pueden ser tan eficaces al estudiar el riesgo cardiovascular de un paciente, que otros datos clínicos como son la glucemia o los niveles de colesterol en sangre. Algo de particular importancia particularmente en países pobres con sistemas de salud deficitarios en los que no se puede realizar análisis sanguíneos a la población general.

La investigación se inició en el año 2010 con más de 4000 personas a los que se realizaron múltiples pruebas diagnósticas a través de ecografías vasculares o scáneres de las principales arterias del cuerpo.

No necesitamos pruebas complejas para conocer nuestra salud cardiovascular y, como he escrito en múltiples ocasiones, la modificación del estilo de vida que depende exclusivamente de nosotros (ejercicio físico, alimentación sana y dejar de fumar) es fundamental para tener una vida más sana.
